Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT): What Is It and How Dangerous Is It?
What is Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT), and how dangerous is it?
Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) is a synthetic antioxidant commonly used as a food preservative and stabilizer to prevent the oxidation of fats and oils, prolonging the shelf life of processed foods. BHT is also used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and animal feed. That organic meat and dairy product you are buying may not be 100% organic after all.
When fats are exposed to air, their unsaturated components turn into hydroperoxides, which break down into volatile compounds that can have unpleasant odors — and BHT is used to prevent this.
Where Is BHT Found?
BHT is found everywhere, particularly in:
Potential Side Effects of BHT
As an endocrine disruptor, BHT can impact testosterone levels as well as affect sperm quality. It might also cause enlargements in the liver, inflammatory effects in the lungs, renal dysfunction, and a decrease in potassium levels.
1. Allergic reactions. Some individuals may be sensitive or allergic to BHT, experiencing symptoms such as skin rashes, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing upon consumption.
2. Potential carcinogenicity. There is some evidence suggesting that high doses of BHT may have carcinogenic effects in animal studies. However, more research is needed to determine the relevance of these findings to human health.
3. Hormone disruption. BHT has been shown to exhibit estrogenic and antiandrogenic properties in laboratory studies, raising concerns about its potential impact on hormonal balance and reproductive health.
4. Liver toxicity. High doses of BHT have been linked to liver toxicity in animal studies, although the relevance to humans is still under investigation.
5. Potential for oxidative stress. While BHT is primarily used as an antioxidant, some studies suggest that it may have pro-oxidant effects under certain conditions, leading to oxidative stress in the body.
